POLISH HISTORY IN BALTIMORE

Polish immigration to Baltimore began in the late 19th century, peaking between 1880 and 1920 when economic opportunities in the U.S. attracted thousands fleeing political repression and poverty under foreign rule in Poland. Many Poles settled in Fell’s Point, drawn by jobs in shipbuilding, manufacturing, and the port industry. The community quickly established a strong presence, building institutions like St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in 1889 and forming cultural organizations to preserve their language, traditions, and faith. The area became a hub of Polish-American life, with Polish shops, bakeries, and social halls that reflected the vibrant culture of the immigrant community.

Over time, Polish immigrants and their descendants shaped the character of Fell’s Point and Baltimore at large. Their labor contributed significantly to the city’s industrial growth, while their cultural contributions enriched Baltimore’s identity. Events like the annual Polish Festival highlight the enduring legacy of the Polish community in the city. Today, although Fell’s Point has evolved into a popular destination for visitors and residents, echoes of its Polish roots remain in landmarks, traditions, and the stories of families who shaped its history. We hope to play a role in preserving that history and culture for the latest generation of Baltimore residents and visitors alike.
